Horizon 10/21/2009
speaker: Johnson Pang
What does discipline mean to you?
what is the difference between wisdom and knowledge?
- wisdom is the proper application of knowledge
- Knowledge = informed; Wisdom = transformed
Descipline requires hard work
Discipline requires right timing
Take action
passivity brings poverty
We often have this mentality:
"Jesus is my Lord and Savior but I will follow Him later."
Do it TODAY, obey God NOW
delayed obedience is also a sin.
how often do we say?
- oh yeah, i've been good with my devos lately, it's ok to skip one day, i will catch up tomorrow
- i'm running late... will do devos in car... *gets distracted in car*... *gets distracted at work/lunch/work/driving home* by bedtime... "ah, i'll do it tomorrow morning"
- just let me sleep 5 more minutes
do you hit the snooze button? (guilty) If so, how many times? (how ever many times I could get away with)
doing nothing leads to nothing.
indecision is a decision.
wow. so yeah, as u can see, we had an awesome fellowship and followed by omg oh so good small group.
the questions for us from the msg is: how are your spiritual disciplines? (not good...) what areas do you desire to have more discipline in? (prayer, reading) what do you believe God has called you to do with your life, and how are you taking action to fulfill that? what ways can we keep each other accountable in small group, so that we don't remain passive and celebrate mediocrity in life?
what i shared about what i want to work on this week is the very fact that i will meditate and think more on this msg. the reason why that's my goal (small goal too) is because alot of times i listen to the msg, and i think "hey, that really make sense", or "i really need to work on that" but i don't do anything about it. until Justin asks me about what i liked about so-and-so's msg, i probably have forgotten about it.
this week i am going to think about this discipline issue, plus how i can improve.
but yeah, all i can say is wow.
and thank you God that my new super awesome housemate, Kristi came to fellowship with us!!!!!

Yesterday, I started getting sore throat (one of my coworkers was sick :( ) and so I have been trying to NOT get sick. not good timing :(
Justin and I were supposed to go to David and Nadia's house to cook dinner for them since they just had a baby....
but now we can't do that coz we can't risk getting them sick, you know?
We've been trying to do our thank you cards this week... and I think we only did like 60%.
Still need to stamp them and address them.
Tonight for Fellowship the whole fellowship is doing take out at Chili's because for work, Medtronic is helping JDRF (Juveniles Diabetes Research Foundation) fundraise... it's been crazy around here. Everything is JDRF.
We have themed baskets for raffle, In 'n Out cookout, Taco Truck is coming, Bakesale, and for tonight, Chilis is donating 15% of the bill (when we give them this coupon) to JDRF!
So I brought it up during fellowship and decided that we'll do a takeout at Chili's. It should be fun.
The new housemate, Kristi is coming too. to fellowship.
now both of our housemates are christian girls :) hoo-rayyy.

One Month
yay! Happy 1 month anniversary to Justin and I!
I can't believe it's been that long already.
everything is still quite fresh in my mind.
Justin and I are still recovering from the wedding and slowly working our way through the thank you cards, and re organizing around the house.
We have been so excited to use our new stuff from the registry!
and finally to almost starting to look at our Europe stuff...
The past month... has been great :)
We try our best to be what a good married couple should be
and we both have been happy
So what's new in our lives?
- thank you letters!
- I need to change my name
- order a wedding photo album
- plan honeymoon
- we got a new housemate! so now Justin is living with 4 girls =P (My mom is going back to tw in 2 days though)
- we replaced the garage door
- we had the house exterior re painted. - should have pics soon
i think that's all for now.
definitely keeping us busy!!!! :)
so yeah, no time to think about kids ;)

i just wanna say.....
i LOVE my husband :) :) :)
he would wake up in the middle of the night if it gets cold to turn off our fan... or close the window... or make sure i have a blanket :)
sure there are things we both need to work on.. but when we see our wedding bands on our fingers... we know to compromise and to communicate and to work things out, in love :)
We are so blessed to have such close family and friends to love us and to help us.
you know who you are... and we love you...

hitched!
Justin and I have been married for 5 days!
So far so good...
I should post some pictures up when we get them.
We've been making the bed (according to the picture on the bed set my mom bought us), cooking together, reading the bible together (or Justin reading it to me =P), etc.
Actually, the biggest difference is that Justin doesn't have to drive home late at night after spending time with me..
Before, we had limited time because Justin had his stuff at home so he couldn't always take care of business or study at my house, so he would have to go home early to do those things. But now, he can take care of those things while I am doing something else in close proximity.
Oh! Another difference is that Justin doesn't have to leave, etc when I take a shower. It's actually a very good time for communication haha (no distractions)
I don't know if that makes sense... =P
More later :)

money
so last night for fellowship, we talked about Money
(Eccl 5: 8-20)
the final conclusions are:
- these things (luxuries) are not bad but they will not satisfy.
when a multi-millionaire was asked which million made you the most happy?
he responded: the next one.
we say things like, if only we can get the next promotion, or this house, or this paycheck, we will be ...... But, who is there to remind us that we said these things when we do get it? Because so often, we say we will be happy when we get this or that, but when we get it, we tend to (not intentionally either) forget that we said we will be happy.
- we cannot take all the wealth we have/will obtain in life with us when we pass away
- the more you love money, the more painful it is when you lose it
and yet it's soooo easy to lose money in life...
Seek first in the Kingdom of God, and all these things should be added to you.

holy freaking crap
39 days left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
omg. holy crap.
haha. in case you haven't noticed. i am freaking out just by looking at this number...
We finished 90 programs and guestbook cards
but we need more, that would be a wise idea.
I think we have to make like 30 more at least, but they were quite easy/fast to make that hopefully next weekend we'll have time.
this weekend it's our engagement photoshoot!!!
It could have been earlier, but I think this is good.
We couldn't do it in the bay area but I think Davis and Sac will still do and still be cute.
We will blow up some for the wedding day I think.
We are in dire need of branches for the centerpeices. We have been so lazy to go out and pick some @@ Maybe later on when I get lazy we'll just think of some other way and not have branches.... We'll see.
The diet has been going good I think?
Justin: -18lbs (-33lbs from heaviest)
Vicky: -6lbs (-10lbs from heaviest)
omg. holy crap.

i think it's from swimming and not drying out my ears?
although i must say i have NEVER gotten this before.. so it's weird to me, since i swim so much ><
over the wknd Justin and I met up with some friends from the bay area (they're here for a wedding) and we hung out in Orange County
We visited them in irvine and saw fireworks in Newport beach.
there were some firsts this wknd
this wknd:
- started with visit to Urgent care visit- Swimmer's ear! Had to have Justin put ear drops in my left ear the whole wknd, and walking around head tilted right or with a toilet paper stuck in it when we're at home ;)
- first time i had California Burrito: carne asada, guacamole, and instead of beans, they give you FRIES. man that was good and some fresh fries (not soggy at all!)
- first time i tried Golden Spoon: we had pecan praline frozen yogurt with walnuts and Heath bars. so yummy
- first time going to Newport beach, and watching fireworks by the water
- first time going to Spectrum mall in Irvine. wow that mall is beautiful. it's outdoors... it's sort of like Broadway plaza, but much nicer. and sooo pretty.
- 4th july BBQ and hiking with the friends and Maggie + Mochi
- played Boggle and first time someone other than justin won...... finally some competition for my fiance :) (justin was excited)
this coming weekend is Justin's bachelor party
how excitingggggg :D

i have Swimmer's Ear... ><
i left work at 1 today (2 hours early) to go to urgent care because since yesterday i had this pain in my ear (external, not in the canal) that hurt when i was sleeping too. And i think because of it i got sore throat.
annnnd it really freaked me out this morning when Maggie was barking... i thought she was on my left but turned out she was on my right.
So turns out this is what i have. HOW LAME. lol
i have to put ear drops.. and cannot swim.. and have to plug my ears during showers.. lol
anyway. so after urgent care Justin and I went to get our haircuts. I haven't gotten a haircut in SOOOOOO long it's disgusting. lol. she said i could go back to get some stuff done a month before the wedding so it would be easily managed or something.
i can't believe justin and i have about 10 wks left before our wedding.

more movies
saw
Code
Shooter
confessions of a shopaholic
and watching Body of Lies
tonight.
Shooter and Code were sooo good.
Confessions of Shopaholic... was ok, I think Justin related more to the main character than me lol. (is that bad???)
some scenes were especially exaggerated, and cheesy =P but overall ok movie
Code on the other hand. man i love action. It's one of those trick within a trick within a trick within a trick movies. love it.
diet update:
justin: -10!!!! bing bing bing!! Justin is at -25 if compared to his highest weight.
vicky: -4 (-9 if compared to highest weight)
we went to Santa Monica pier last night. It's similar to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. performances, scenery, very expensive burgers and fries, and tons of ppl. :) it's beautiful though. Justin and I walked to near the 3rd street promenade and checked out some stores, and saw the places we went last time we were there (more than a yr ago!).
we ended up at this english shop. it's one of those stores that sell english tea sets, and english teas, and english chocolates. they had Coffee Crisp too!!! i remember i used to LOVE eating those in hs, and Justin's never had them before, so i got those.. and KINDER chocolate. (omg to DIEE for!!!!!!!) and Dark chocolate Kit Kat! :)
I LOVE hazelnut and chocolate. but sadly. those are my weaknesses =/

our new thing
So Justin and I are trying to lose weight/get fit/get more muscle for the wedding
We are eating alot healthier now!!
We use very little oil cooking, eat cottage cheese, baby carrots, and double fiber bread!!! i am waiting to see how well this bread works.. so far... not too badddd lol
for dinner,
we usually eat spinach salad (the fiance makes killer salads now)
very little rice
and either salmon, veg meat, or chicken breast
and sometimes he throws in a few egg whites in the salads- sooooo goooooodddd
he's been running almost every other day
and i... am eating less snacks from the coworker who i always stole food from- oh so much chinese snacks!!!!! He stocks up every other wknd by going on snack shopping spree at the ranch 99
so anyway,
i think we need to record our results somehow...
his avg weight is
9 lbs less than his previous average weight
mine is about
3.5 lbs
oh and btw, we have been semi slacking off on our wedding planning.
i've written addresses on alot of the invitations but we have not mailed any out.
we have hand delivered to most of the socal (work + church) ppl already though.
have to work on them today and this wknd
oh and btw btw, we got this 10 dollar special at blockbuster- where u pay 10 dollars, and for 7 days u can watch unlimited movies BUT you have to take them out one at a time (like u go back to exchange for another one)
here are the movies we have seen so far this wk:
twilight
marley and me
taken
benjamin button
bedtime stories
we have this deal until sunday. probably not gonna go out alot this wknd.... ;)

Up
On saturday we went to watch the movie UP in 3D.
I must say... it was a tear jerker. lol.
It made me cry a few times..
I really loved watching the scenes of Carl and Ellie.
They are so in love and so cute togetherrr
I think if I were her I probably would be pessimistic and think that I could have done more with my life
but I should be happy about it
Even if Justin and I do not achieve something great, we have each other
and that should be enough
ps. I did not know Star Trek's Starfleet Academy was filmed at CSUN
http://www.scificool.com/your-first-look-at-star-fleet-academy-in-trek-11/
and I didn't notice Toy Story's cameo appearance in UP- but here it is:

Yeah I do crack my knuckles... from time to time. Just like cracking my back..... it's a habit ><
anyway... this wk is the birthday wk!
I really miss and appreciate all the people who have told me happy birthday already. Even it's not even my birthday yet... lol. :) but I feel really special.
Sat night we went to celebrate the May bdays with Justin's class, and I felt like I haven't seen everyone in a while... it was very nice to just relax and talk. even if it means hanging out at Walmart after dinner just to walk around. walk off all that bottomless fries lol.
Justin- May 9th
Me- May 22nd
Trisha- May 24th
Dorina- May 25th
Wednesday for lunch my whole group took a few of us to CPK, especially since our birthdays are so close together.
the manager- May 13th
me- May 22nd
the coworker- May 24th
the coworker- May 25th -->>> Isn't that FUNNY!!!! 2 May 24th and 25th....
then afternoon there was cake cutting and my whole dept signed a card for me..
and like one of my coworker says.... this is the last birthday as Ms. Chung so I better cherish it.
and wow. that's a whole diff way to think about it.
Today me and the closer ladies of the work place went to lunch at a Thai place
o-m-g. our waitress had a patch of hair at the area higher than her throat... and they're about 1 inch long..............
i cannot help but stare at it.
of COURSE I did it subtlely........ what are you talking about...
I still have to spend it with the family.
My whole family is here visiting.
I feel so bless.ed Thank you :)

As far back as I can remember...
when I was 15 I was worried about boy drama and had my first real boyfriend
when I was 16 I was worried about other drama and had secrets
when I was 17 I was worried about my SATs and drama with asian parents in the community
when I was 18 I was worried about not fitting in in college and finding the right church/fellowship
when I was 19 I was worried about not doing good in my classes
when I was 20 I was worried about finding the right internships and join the right clubs
when I was 21 I was worried about my GPAs and having the right classes to graduate on time
when I was 22 I was worried about finding a post college job
when I was 23 I was worried about finding my goal in life.. and moving to Los Angeles for a new job
when I was 24 I am worried about my career goals, my relationship with Justin and planning for the wedding and financial aspect for it
I am turning 25 in 13 days... what will I be worrying about?
This is not the kind of question I should be asking myself
or the kind of thing to be looking forward to...
Enough is enough....

time flies...
I can't believe it's already Friday.
As much as I love it... it's so scary how time passes by so fast!
We're only 5 months away from our potential wedding date, and we haven't done ANYTHING for it.
We need to go up north to look at the venues because we're not going to drop a few thousand dollars on a place that we don't get to see...
And next wknd we can't go up. So the first wknd we are free is the last wknd of April.
That is freakin' crazy.
I have SO much stuff to do, and we would really hate to make the date later..
We will see what happens I guess ><
In the mean time, I did try on some dresses :) :)
and all I have to say is, I need to tone my body. lol
It gave me a good idea of what kind of style I like, and the length of the train I want.
I feel like I can't get anything done without a set venue/date.
Everywhere we go they tell us we better hurry up because we don't have much time left.

weird dreams
Lately I have been having some weird dreams
Just the other day.... I dreamt that I bought Justin at a penny store.
hahaha. omgoodness.
I told Justin about it and he says "What! not even a dollar store?!?!?"
hahah lol.
Then LAST night... I dreamt that I was so stressed about finding a venue for our wedding
that someone told me to just do it at El Super (El Super is a Mexican grocery store, GREAT prices btw). That person told me that you could get a super cheap wedding package (like 20 bucks?!) and then have the ceremony on their lawn.
In my dream, for some reason, this all made alittle more sense to me than now. Even though I was still confused in my dream.. I remember asking "What! they do weddings?!"
hahaha. yeah... I think I've been thinking about it alittle too much.
I wonder what Justin says to the El Super wedding idea =p

venue
Justin and I have exploring different venues throughout the bay area to as far as (omg) Foresthill or Nicasio.
I am really hoping we can find something by the end of this month and have the deposit put down... If we have to, we'll ask family and friends to go check it out (if we can't)
We understand why we couldn't have it at the original place. It's a private home and we didn't need a reason better than that... However we're just blah coz now we need to find some place 5 months before the wedding. Of course, if we can't find a place we might just postpone the wedding date??? I really hope not...

Wknd

WOw it's already Wednesday and I feel like I haven't even had much time to reflect on this past wknd.
On Friday I slept over at mom's in SJ. I miss hanging out with her :) She made me breakfast and she was all showing off the fairy tale book to her housemates ;)
I then went to brunch with some Theta Tau girls to eat some more. THEN I got dropped back off at my mom's so we could have lunch at her school. Yes I was a PIG that day... In the afternoon I hung out with Trisha and she dropped me off at Justin's friend's wedding. It was a Mormon wedding. First time for me.. and I didn't know being able to go inside their church/temple was a big thing until talking to Liz on Sunday, and some other people and found out they were not allowed to go in when they went to a Mormon wedding. I saw some of Justin's gaming buddies that I haven't seen for a few years which was good. Then we dropped by Emeryville to visit Bonnie Li. OMG I haven't seen her for like 4, 5 years! But it seems like yesterday and she was so mommy-ish in feeding us two! We also talked about some wedding stuff that was fun.
Sunday we had lunch with Mike Chan and Liz in Sac before we had to go to Avenue Q.
I have to say, somewhere in there, I almost cried... I was really touched by the lyrics... and it was like they were talking about me. It was fitting for almost everyone in a quarterlife crisis. I soooo wanted to sing out loud, and Justin and I knew ALLLLLL the little laughs and dings in the songs that made us feel like we really fit in, and way more into it coz now that I think back, if I have never heard of the songs it would have probably been hard to understand some of them, especially Christmas Eve. lol.
I am so glad I got Justin and I tickets this was my Christmas gift to Justin =P that I really thought it was worth it. Money has been so hard to come by these days.. especially now I have a house and am getting married!!! It is pretty stressful when I think about how we need money for all the deposits for the services we need, etc. But Nadia reminded me that it's gonna get so much more stressful later I might as well try to enjoy it now.

Proverbs 6:
16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
wowwwwww...
sighssss.
Can you imagine a God loving you when you do so many things that are detestable to him???
Over and over we're forgiven... When will I learn my lesson?
Lord thank you for the cross.

It's different being engaged.
Justin and I have known each other for 7 years... and going out for almost 4, but this is still different.
It's like a different level of commitment. kinda like... before we wanted to stick together, but now it's more for sure that we will
dunno how to explain it.
anyway, it's funky saying "this is my fiance" hahahaha.
Justin would randomly text me and say "Hi Fiance" lol it's cute, and Meng is probably the one that should be least surprised, but he also says "o m g you're really getting married"
I can't believe it either!
I pray that I won't go insane!! allll the things we gotta do!
and haha. I was reading Maid of Horror stories yesterday. yikes.

how it happened
Justin has been mentioning that we should go up to the bay the wknd of 3/14.. to celebrate the Valentine's Day we didn't celebrate.
Then the wk before, Trisha had asked me if I could take the Friday off so I could be in the bay for longer and spend the day with her. It was a rare request so I told her I would think about it. I ended up taking the day off, and we left on Thursday after I got off work for the 6 hour drive.
Trisha planned for us to get a manicure, lunch, watch "He's just not that into you" and finally dinner. I also called Justin after the movie to tell him that I didn't want him to think that I am forcing him to propose (little did I know he was rehearsing for the proposal! So I obviously didn't know I was calling him to tell him this the day before he proposed). The whole day with Trisha was great. We talked alot... and it was very relaxing and pleasant to be able to just hang out and have girly time for the WHOLE day- something we never get to do...
Saturday finally came.
We started eating breakfast with my mom in the morning (and it was probably really hard for her to not say anything since she knew what was to come- I bet she was excited too), then we headed to Kimi's after that on our way to Davis to "drop off something". Actually, we did have something to drop off from last year when we brought back a souvenir from Taiwan. But Justin also left her house with something in his hand. I asked him what it was... and after hesitation, he told me to open it.
He wrote me a 999-word Fairy tale book! And Kimi was so amazing in putting it together with professional binding and everything from scratch. It was very impressive and I was excited. On the drive to Davis, he told me to read the first chapter. It was about me. I shed some tears coz it's so cute!
Our first destination was Little Prague- a little Czech restaurant we're both very fond of. Their eggs benedict is amazing. We read another chapter there.

Then we drove to MU on campus, and played 5 MUGA coins worth of PHOTOHUNT. It brings back so many memories...

From MU, we walked to my old house near Wildhorse golf course in Davis. It took us over an hour, but surprisingly it didn't seem long. The weather was perfect... the scenery brings back memories. We sang songs along the way, and talked about everything. Just like when we were best friends...

When we finally got there, Justin said we needed to go to my old house and sit on the driveway (coz that's what we used to do) He even put his arm around my neck justin like when he asked me out 7 years ago... Then he suggested that we go to the playground by the house, and talk there. When we got to the play ground, there was already a bible, a towel, a soap thingy, and a bucket of water. He started reading Ephesians 5 and John 13 where Jesus washed the disciples' feet, and talked about serving. We also read the scripture on husbands and wives.

Then he knelt down before me... and I told him it was embarrassing since it was out in public, and asked him if he was going to wash my feet!!!! He says yes and omggggg. it was pretty embarrassing =P The water was warm surprisingly, and I didn't even know how the stuff on the bench was there in the first place.
After he washed my feet, Vince and Mike picked us up to go to Konditorei- a dessert place we're also very fond of...

THEN we drove to Vacaville to shop INCLUDING RING SHOPPING. sneaky Justin
Finally. Our last destination was in the bay area. We stopped by this beautiful place by the water... when the sun was almost setting. We walked around for a bit... and sat down on a bench in front of a restaurant. Justin mentioned that the restaurant we were going to was 30 min away, so I didn't think anything of it. We read more chapters here... and all of a sudden, he said he needed to go to the bathroom.
I waited and waited, and took some pictures. Finally.... off to my left... I see someone in a suit of armors. I was so confused I started looking left and right for Justin... Then this knight started walking towards the front of me... still a bit of a distance away. I started calling Justin's name... just in case that it's him... lol.
I called his name more... then he finally answered me. I told him to come over but he said he couldn't. what do you mean you can't????? Then Vince and Mike walked out with this big frame with nothing in the middle... and placed it in front of me, between me and Justin.. then asked me to read the next chapter. "A Picture Perfect Fairy Tale Ending" was the title. My heart pounded sooooo fast... coz just yesterday I reminded him I wasn't rushing him! It was like a dream... Justin in that frame with the sunset and the ocean and the Golden gate bridge.... It was so beautiful my mind probably drew a blank.
He says loudly: "Vicky, if you will be my princess I will be your knight in shiny armor from now til forever"
OMGGGGGGG. I was thinking "who says that?????" but in a good way.... I was so speechless that the only thing that came out of my mouth was "Justin you're so cheeeessy" with an embarrass giggle. He said "I know" with more giggling... I then proceed to tell him that it was embarrassing because it was in front of a restaurant, etc. He then told me to turn around.... and when I did... I saw my friends inside the restarant crowded by the huge glass windows waving at me and taking pictures... OMGGGGGGGGG.

Finally, he got down on one knee and said "Victoria Chung, will you marry me?" and trust me, I thought I was dreaming... and even though we talk about getting married and what we want for our wedding, I never knew how I would respond exactly.... I stood there being surprised and stunned.. and finally he said "Answer me!" hahahaha. omg so I said "ok!" then "Of course I will!"
Then we kissed and took pictures inside the picture frame.. with the sunset and the water and the Golden Gate bridge behind us...
Then Justin had to change back to his normal clothing before we head into the restaurant... My favorite girls were there and I felt so blessed and lucky to have all my friends in my life! Nothing can replace them and I really appreciate them soooooo much!!!!!
